Energy-The Technology You Must Know in the 21st Century (NCTU OCW Course)

Prof. Ching-Yao Chen is a Distinguished Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (formerly known as National Chiao Tung University till 01/2021), one of the leading research universities in Taiwan. After earning a BS from National Chung-Hsing University in 1988 and two years mandatory services in the ROC army, he studied at the Department of Aerospace Engineering in University of Southern California, where he received his MS and Ph.D. in 1992 and 1998, respectively. Before his return to Taiwan in 1999, Prof. Chen was a research associate in the University of Southern California and University of Electro-Communications (Tokyo). His research interests lie in fundamental fluid dynamics, with an emphasis on interfacial instability. Recently he has extended his research to dynamics of ferrofluids and magnetic-particles.

Many of Prof. Chen's researches had been highlighted in scientific publications, such as images appearing on Physics of Fluids poster and American Physical Society annual calendar, and results reported in Physics Today magazine. He was an awardee of the Distinguished Young Scholar in Mechanics by the Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (R.O.C. Taiwan) in 2011, and the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies International Visiting Research Scholar of University of British Columbia (Canada) in 2014. Prof. Chen was elected as Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Fellow of Aeronautical and Astronautical Society of Republic of China (AASRC, Taiwan) in 2019 and 2021, respectively. He was the convener of the Aerospace Engineering, Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology (R.O.C. Taiwan) during 2018~2020.

Research Interests: CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics), Miscible/Immiscible Interfaces, Magnetic Fluids/Particles
